Queen Victoria
Arguably, the age of Modern Monarchy in Britain started with the reign of Queen Victoria. Due to legal reforms that swept Britain during the 18th and 19th century, the house of Commons became the most powerful chamber of governance and the role of the Lords and monarchy became merely symbolic. It was since Victoria's reign that the monarchy became more than symbolic and gained some of its lost importance-"the right to be consulted, the right to advice, and the right to warn"- Walter Bagelot. Without doubt, Queen Victoria was the longest serving British monarch in the history of England who oversaw a period of dramatic changes in the socio-economic structure of the British society.
