Emily Jane Brontë
Emily Jane Brontë was the middle sister of the three Brontë sisters and was born in Thornton, England on July 30th 1818 and later died at the age of 30 in July 1848. Later the family would move to Haworth before the birth of Anne Brontë. The mother of the Brontë family died while the three Brontë sisters were still fairly young and through the use of their imaginations along with their 3 brothers, Emily created 4 imaginary lands which would later on in life play an important role in her novels.
While very few pieces of literature survived from the early years of Emily Jane Brontë, she had managed to write a number of short poems as well as a novel about her youth and her sibling’s imaginations.
By 1842, Emily Jane had managed to gain admittance into the Ladies Academy at Law Hill School and then later would attend a boarding school along with her sisters in Brussels. Thanks to the discovery of Emily’s poetic talents by the eldest sister, Charlotte, the three Brontë sisters were able to collaborate on a book together and publish it jointly in 1846. At the time, not only were the Brontë sisters fairly young, Anne being only 19, but also the fact that they were females, they were forced to take up pen names that reflected a more masculine writer and the joint book was released under the title of Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell.
Emily Jane had only published one book which consisted of only 2 parts of a three volume set. Wuthering Heights was finished by her sister Anne and was entitled Agnes. Unfortunately for Emily Jane, her health too had weakened at an early age and due to her refusal of medical treatment, Emily passed away in 1848.
