While there are many names which can be considered to be commonplace or very popular, not all of them are created equal. In some instances a surname can represent almost a full percentage of a given populous whereas one which represents less then half a percent can still be considered as common assuming the remaining names used are less popular. One such name is that of Wright. While in general it may be considered to be a common surname, the commonness of it will greatly differ depending on your location.

Wright gets its origin from the Old English name of Wryhta which may also be spelled wyrhta. It simply means a worker, but more specifically a maker. This concept can be seen in the maritime industry in which the make of a ship is known as a shipwright. Due to it being of Old English, Wright has become a popular surname especially in Britain.

Over the years, there have been a great number of famous persons whose name was Wright. These people can be as famous in international terms as Orville and Wilbur Wright who created the first successful airplane or even famous to a more localized section of the world such as Ben Wright which was a named shared by footballers, cricketers and others.

You have many different persons sharing the common surname of Wright in the field of sports such as Anthony Wright, an American football player, who shared his name with a Canadian field hockey player. Beals Wright was known as an American tennis player while Bill Wright was known for his participation in the Negro Leagues of the sport, baseball.

From sports to politics and from sciences to art, there has been a famous Wright in almost every possible field. C.D. Wright was known for poetry while Cathy Wright was known for cooking. Chalky was known for Mexican boxing while Chauncey was known for philosophy.

It seems as though there have been a number of important or famous persons who have shared the surname of Wright. Each and every single one of them has made changes in the way we see the world today. Some of these changes may have been small while others may have been larger than life. Unfortunately for most people who are searching their family’s lineage, the first thing that someone will notice is that true to the fact that this name was given to workers and makers of the time when structuring of family names where first introduced, there will be a number of potential origins from which your family could have come from without being related to another one. For most, what this means is that tracing your ancestry to the Wright Brothers may not even be possible.

The good news though, is that the name is not one that was likely to be changed when immigrating into another country like some of the other more complex names out there. What this means is that when searching your family’s history, dead ends are less likely to occur in most situations.
