The surname of Roberts is a very common surname which has its origins dating back to the Saxon and Norman era. The name itself means bright fame and its meaning is that of Germanic origins in which the first element translates to hrod that means fame and beraht which means bright. With the s following the ending of the surname much like many others, the meaning of the name can be attributed to that of a patronymic surname in that it means the son of Robert.

Before the 1044 Norman conquest, the name Roberts was heard from time to time. However, it would not become a commonplace name until after England was conquered by the Normans. Today, due to the lengthy history of the name, Roberts is considered to be a very common surname in both England as well as Wales. However, unlike many other common surnames, this particular one is a very rarely used one in both Scotland as well as Ireland.

There have been numerous famous Roberts in the world throughout time. For example, there have been two famous Abraham Roberts of which the first was a British General and the second an architect. Andy Roberts is also very popular in that there was one who was a British Historian, a cricketer from Antigua, and an English musician. You can find two Brian Roberts who were known for their athletic accomplishments in the states with one of them being a soccer player and the other a baseball player.

You can find many Charlies and Charles Roberts throughout history which has played important roles in the annals of time. Charlie Roberts was known for his sportsmanship in American Football while at the same time Charles Roberts could be talking about a United States Congressman, a board game creator, a Canadian football player or even a poet from Canada.

While the last name of Roberts may not be very common in Scotland, that did not stop David Roberts from becoming known for his painting. Furthermore, he shares his name with a Welsh swimmer, the 36th mayor of the city of Hoboken in New Jersey as well as a ragtime composer in the United States.

Then again, when it comes to Ed Roberts you could be talking about a famous disability rights leader, an important engineer in the computer industry, a racecar driver, and both an American politician as well as a Canadian politician.

There have been many different Roberts over the centuries who have all played pivotal roles in the history of mankind and while we could sit there and go through all of them, that would take a very long time to read. Instead, you need to focus on who in your family lineage may have been a famous or well-known Roberts and then go from there.
