One of the most commonly heard surnames which are used today is that of the name Jones. The name Jones comes from a number of possible meanings that include the “Son of John”, the “Son of Joan” and is also known to have roots in the name Jonah which has its roots in the Viking heritage. Furthermore, there has also been some suggestions that the Germanic settlers that made their way into the United Kingdom towards the beginning of the medieval period; shortly after the fall of the vast Roman Empire, went by the name of Johannes. According to the recent U.S. Census data, the surname of Jones is considered to be the fourth most common name and in the UK and Wales it is also one of the most common ones found.

There are a number of famous persons which have the surname of Jones. For example, there is a British musician whose name is Kenny Jones, an American musician whose name is Norah Jones. Believe it or not, it is also seen commonly in Mexico as well. Some of the more famous personalities in Mexico with the surname of Jones includes Jeffrey Max Jones, Lupita Jones as well as Rebecca Jones.

In film, due to its common use, the surname of Jones has also been used on an occasion. Some of the most well known uses of this surname include Indiana Jones, the college professor whose weekend getaways include locating lost artefacts, fighting off mystical magicians and seeking out the wonders of the bible. Then you have Bridget Jones whose uncanny life is written in a diary for all to see.

Of course you cannot forget that due to Jones being a very common name, it has also become the names of various places. In the United States for Example, you have the Fort Jones which is in California, Jones Township which is located in Pennsylvania, Jones Creek which can be found in Texas as well as Jones County in which there is one located in Georgia, Iowa, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Dakota as well as Texas. There is even a locality in several Philippine municipalities known as Jones.

We cannot forget to also mention the Bob Jones University which can be found in South Carolina, Jones Beach, the Jones Point Lighthouse on the Potomac and even the St. Jones River not too far away in Delaware.

Then you have the American Rock band which goes by the name of Peace Jones, a comic strip known as the Ballad of Halo Jones, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the British rock group Jesus Jones and even the Jones Soda Company in Washington state.

With so many Jones’ out there, it is no wonder why this name has become one of the most commonly used surnames in the Western world. Chances are that even you may have had a Jones in the family at some point in your family’s history even if your name is not Jones. When you went to school, you probably had many school mates whose last name was Jones as well.
