Antonine Dynasty
The Antonine dynasty is comprised of two Emperors that ruled Rome during the
periods of 180 and 130 A.D. These two Emperors were Marcus Aurelius and Antoninus
Pius. The Antonine dynasty is known for their great leadership abilities. Other
members of this family were Lucius Verus and Commodus. While Hadrian was emperor,
he named Antoninus as the heir to the throne. However, a condition of becoming
ruler was that he had to adopt both Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius. Once Hadrian
died, a peaceful rule started that was marked by benevolence on the part of
Antoninus. He held on to Roman culture and did not have a problem sharing his
power with the Senate.
Once Antoninus died in A.D. 161, he was replaced by Marcus Aurelius. He would
go on to maintain the structure that Antoninus had left behind. He was a accomplished
leader, and was highly skilled in matters related to administration. He was
the last emperor to maintain what is called the Pax Romana. Upon his death,
his son Commodus became a brutal ruler who brought about the end of Pax Romana
and the peace that had been maintained by those who came before him. A number
of historians believe that the reign of Nerva, Trajan, and Antonines was the
very zenith of Rome. However, others feel that Rome had begun to decline by
this time.
